And in her 59th year
she reconciled her friendship
with herself at long last
acquiescing to her mistakes
her choices, deeming them
to be not actual choices
but rather the order of things,
accepting that the hard lessons
were the gifts of wisdom

And in her 59th year
she felt decidedly pretty;
giving up sparring with her body,
moving comfortably into the
things that lit fire in her eyes
preferring to be barefooted as a
toddler or a 60’s flower child
coveting the creations of her
mind and hands above all else

And in her 59th year
she understood mortality as
the gift that taught appreciation
for love, touch, quiet moments
and peace of mind; these keys
to freedom and abundance
Each line around her eyes
and mouth is a memory of
a smile she held for another
